Frequently Asked Questions

How would you describe the Fleishman-Hillard culture?
First and foremost, throughout our global network, we pride ourselves on our teamwork, exceptional client service and impeccable quality of work. So naturally we look to hire the best and brightest in the industry. While we all share these core values, each office has its own subculture. For example, depending on the city, an office may provide transportation subsidies, discounted pricing for gym memberships and sporting events — even on-site yoga classes.

Can you describe your typical interview process?
Because of our high standards, the agency’s interview process is very competitive. The process begins when you submit your resume online for a specific position. If you are identified as a match, you will be contacted by our internal recruiting team for a phone interview. If your phone interview goes well, you will be scheduled to come in for an initial round of face-to-face interviews with the hiring team. This interview usually involves meeting with three to five senior members of the practice group and a writing assessment. If you are selected to move forward, you will then be scheduled to come in and meet with four to six additional hiring managers, including senior leaders across a variety of groups and the general manager of the office.

I noticed on your website that Fleishman-Hillard believes in interoffice collaboration. Does this mean your offices share business?
Yes, we definitely share business and knowledge across practice groups and offices. In fact, 85 percent of our clients use more than one Fleishman-Hillard office. This encourages exceptional client service and gives our associates the opportunity to work on a variety of accounts and projects. You could potentially collaborate with coworkers in Beijing, Johannesburg, Paris, Mexico City or San Francisco.

What can I expect for my career path?
Our promotions take place twice a year, in April and October, and we frequently promote from within. Some of the highest-ranking members of our senior management team began their careers with the agency as interns or assistant account executives.

Do you have training opportunities?
We offer a variety of internal training programs, both virtual and classroom-based. Our training typically covers industry- and agency-related subject matter.

Are international transfers available?
International transfers are available and usually based on client work and staffing needs. Recently, Fleishman-Hillard employees relocated from Kansas City to Hong Kong, from London to San Francisco, and from Brussels to Mumbai.

Do you hire directly from the internship program?
We have hired employees directly from our internship program. However, we typically encourage our interns to spread their wings and gain a bit more experience before moving into a full-time position. It’s more common for us to hire former interns about a year after their internship has ended.

Do you require writing samples and/or a portfolio? What should I include?
Every candidate who comes in for an interview is required to submit a portfolio and/or writing samples. The organization of your portfolio is as important as the samples you include. We favor quality over quantity, so you should prepare a portfolio with a few neatly organized, high-quality samples that you believe represent your very best work. If we consider you for an account staff position, we also require every candidate, regardless of level, to complete a timed writing test.

What skills do you look for in a successful candidate?
The single common thread is strong writing skills. We look for strong writers with agency, journalism or corporate experience. We also appreciate candidates with media relations and client service skills.

If I’m interested in submitting my resume for consideration, should I do so through your website?
Yes, the best way to know that your resume has been routed to the right recruiter is to apply online. Make sure you select a position or positions that best match your background, skill set and location preferences. If you are identified as a match, you will be contacted directly by the recruiter assigned to the position.
